MIKA TAMORI – Psychotropism

After exhausting my earthly debts, and giving out my last gasp. Two days of fever. Too much. I can’t face the outside world anymore（＊）

Mika Tamori’s work seems to be attempting to draw an intense buzz of nothingness into a vacuum, as if trying to escape from earthly constraints. Quantum field theory tells us that a vacuum cannot remain truly empty; there are always particles popping in and out of existence here and there for short intervals. In other words, the vacuum wavers between states of existence and non-existence. The actions of Tamori’s performative practice result in the shattering of meaning, so that a vast new group of images is synthesized from the randomly dispersed images as bodies in perpetual motion, regenerated in the direction of a certain vector, and swarming on her canvas.

The work is titled “Psychotropism” after a term derived from tropism, the phenomenon whereby an organ of a lifeform that is unable to move freely tends to bend in a certain direction, turning towards the source of an external stimulus. Mika Tamori’s Psychotropism shares a basis with the many-worlds interpretation of quantum physics, in which a world consisting of everything that exists in the universe branches into an infinite number of parallel worlds. As if invoking microscopic particles such as atoms, electrons, and light, and taking a quantum approach, in which a single such particle can be omnipresent, existing simultaneously in multiple quantum states, she appears to be seeking painting’s reason for existence.

Continua like space and time, irrespective of whether they are points or minimum extensions of space or time, are considered to consist of atoms. Even if dividing a line an infinite number of times produces an infinitely large number of points, that does not necessarily mean that a line consists of an infinitely large number of points. No matter how many non-existent items you add together, the sum is not existence. And if there is existence, the origin of that existence must be somewhere. However many points of zero length you have, you cannot produce a line of one unit of length. And, however many zeros you add together, they do not become 1. Nevertheless, it is possible to define a point as the intersection between two lines. That is similar to saying that the signified (signifié) does not stop the unfolding of chains of signifiers (signifiants).

The images of Tamori’s work, intersecting in multiple layers, attain incarnation as Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s “flesh of the world.” Merleau-Ponty asserted that “my body is made of the same flesh as the world” (The Visible and the Invisible). In other words, human existence is unified with everything in the world, such that when the right hand touches the left hand, the right hand’s perception of touching the left hand and the left hand’s perception of being touched by the right hand intertwine. He thus proposed a way of thinking in which the subject becomes the object and the object becomes the subject. Mika Tamori’s body of work is very much the “flesh of the world.”

地上での負債に疲れはて、最後の喘ぎが終わったときに。熱の二日間！もはや形振りもかまわず（＊）

MIKA TAMORIの作品は、あたかも地上的束縛から離脱しようとして真空状態における濃密な無のざわめきを呼び込もうとしているかのようだ。量子論によると真空は、空っぽの無の状態を保てず、短時間の間に彼方此方で素粒子が生まれては消えていく。つまり「無」の状態と「有」の状態との間で揺らぐことになる。TAMORIのパフォーマティブな制作過程の行為の結果として意味が粉々に解体され、それら散乱したイメージからあるベクトルへ向かって再生し無窮の運動体として新たに夥しいイメージ群が生成しキャンバスに蝟集されていく。　

　作品タイトルは、”Psychotropism”と命名されている。この ”Psychotropism”とは、「心理的屈性」、つまり、自由に運動できない生物のある器官が、外部から刺激を受け、その刺激源に対して一定方向へ屈曲する性質であると定義されている。このMIKA TAMORIによる「心理的屈性」は、宇宙のあらゆるものを含めた世界が、無数のパラレルワールドに分岐していくという量子論の「多世界解釈」と通底している。あたかも原子や電子、光といったミクロ物質、そしてその一つの物質が同時に遍在し共存しているという量子論的アプローチによって絵画の存在理由を探求しているかのようである。

つまり、空間や時間のような連続体を、それが点であれ、空間や時間の延長の最小量であれ、原子から構成されていると考えられる。「線を無限に分割して、無限にたくさんの点を見い出せる」ことから「線が無限にたくさんの点からなっている」とは言えない。無をいくら足しても有にはならない。有がある以上、どこかに有の起源がなければならない。長さゼロの点から長さ一の線を作る事は出来ない。ゼロをいくら加算しても一にはならない。しかし線と線の交点として点を定義する事は出来る。それは、あたかも記号群(シニフィアン)の連鎖が意味（シニフィエ）によって停止されることなく展開していくかのようである。

そして、重層し交錯した作品イメージは、モーリス・メルロ＝ポンティの「世界の肉」へ受胎されていく。メルロ＝ポンティは、「私の身体は世界と同じ〈肉〉でできている」（『見えるものと見えないもの』）と述べている。つまり、人間は世界のあらゆるものと一体の存在で、例えば、右手が左手に触れるとき、右手が左手に触れるという感覚と、左手が右手に触れられるという感覚の二つを相互陥入し、主体が客体であり、客体が主体であるようという考え方を提示した。MIKA TAMORIの作品群は、まさに「世界の肉」と言えよう。
